Burned, Indeed

Charles Gasparino writes in The New York Post about the Wall Street executives and high administration officials who feel "burned" by the unexpected radicalism of the Obama administration.
First, what did they expect? Why did they think that a guy who was the most liberal senator in the nation, was friends with Bill Ayres, with ties to ACORN was going to be a moderate? Talk about the triumph of hope over experience . . .
Second, it's entirely possible that administration officials like Tim Geithner and Lawrence Summers have been sidelined by more left-wing policy people in The White House. It would fit a pattern of Obama picking people who put a more moderate face on the administration while really taking the advice of those on the left.
But if that's what's truly going on, and people like Geithner and Summers are witnessing the implementation of policies they honestly believe are ruinous for the country, doesn't their own integrity -- and patriotism, even -- require that they resign?

Politico's Smith Doesn't Get It -- Launches Attack on Townhall Contributor

Just got this from Townhall Magazine friend and contributor Matthew Vadum, who wrote the August investigative report on ACORN:
The mainstream media's death march continues.
Ben Smith of the Politico doesn't seem to understand that ACORN, SEIU, and the Working Families Party are the same entity. I explained this fact painstakingly in two profiles of ACORN last year: here and here.
Without even attempting to reach me he launched a vicious, false attack.
I don't particularly care what Mr. Smith thinks of me but he does reach a lot of readers with his ACORN misinformation.
He was responding to one of the most talked about stories of this week, my American Spectator article on Patrick Gaspard, President Obama's senior advisor who has a long history with ACORN. Just google Gaspard's name and you'll see it's been talked about by Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and many, many others.
Smith totally misses the point. Gaspard worked for ACORN and the facts prove it. It doesn't matter what Gaspard's title was while he worked there. ACORN officials constantly change titles, according to my ACORN sources -- and I have many, many of them, all across America feeding me information. Gaspard goes way back with Bertha Lewis, ACORN's current chief organizer. It is beyond dispute.
(To see how angry the left is about the story, just visit the Media Matters for America website. Here's a choice blog post from left-wing hatchet man Eric Boehlert.)
Here is my original article.
Here is my response to the Politico.
If you want to try and poke holes in my story, go ahead: I won't take it personally. But if you understand what ACORN is really about you'll see I'm right. I've been studying this group intensively --some would say obsessively-- for the last year. I've written so many articles on ACORN, given so many media interviews on ACORN, that I've lost count.
Thanks everyone, and please bear in mind there is MUCH MORE coming soon on ACORN. The group is far from dead. Wounded, yes, but not mortally.

A Whiff of Cronyism?

The efforts by the Obamas to woo the Olympics to Chicago is unprecedented for the level of presidential involvement. No less an Obama fan than Eugene Robinson has wondered whether it bespeaks some level of immodesty -- and questions whether the Copenhagen trip is "overkill."
What's more, while 47% of Chicagoans are hoping the city wins the 2016 Olympics, fully 45% of them are not. So in going to Copenhagen to lobby for the Olympics, it's not as though the Obamas are simply promoting the collective hopes of their once-fellow-Chicagoans.
So why the big push, anyhow?
The American Prowler lays out a serious offairly significant links between the Obamas and those who stand to benefit -- either monetarily or prestige-wise -- through Chicago winning the games. Most significantly,
Obama senior adviser David Axelrod's firm, AKPD Message and Media, which employs his son, and which owes Axelrod money, is one of the contractors on the Chicago Olympics bid.
Another beneficiary would be the Pritzker family (Penny Pritzker was one of Obama's foremost big-money fundraisers).
Certainly none of this is illegal, and of course it's possible that the Obamas simply want to see their hometown through a haze of Olympic glory. All that being said, consider what the outcry would be if, say, George W. Bush went to unprecedented lengths to win oil-drilling contracts for the US that would benefit Americans, but also help some of his best friends and biggest contributors in the oil industry -- if you dare. "Corrupt" would be the kindest epithet applied by the left.

Bette Midler Warns Glenn Beck Could Set Off a Rwanda-Like Civil War in U.S.; Faults Education System UPDATE: Beck Responds

Here's Hollywood insight so stupid it required correction from Joyless Behar. Behar premiered her first CNN show with guest and fellow intellectual powerhouse Bette Midler on Tuesday to the delight of liberal Democrats all over America. Besides her crystal ball prediction regarding a U.S. Rwanda-like bloodbath, note where Midler puts the blame regarding all the imperfections in the U.S.
Midler's blaming educators for societal imperfections highlights the thinking of liberals: Everything can be fixed and perfected with 10-plus years of baptism in the waters of liberal brainwashing. My hope is that this and many other recent incidences of liberal brainwashing will slow the occurrence in which the stupid mantra of how great the teaching profession is, how important an education is, and how they are not paid enough; yada, yada, yada.
Ask yourself this: What kind of education are our kids receiving and from whom? Answers to both questions should chuck that old school slogan out the window. This ridiculous American notion that education is a value in itself and deserves all our respect and praise is very scary.
UPDATE: Liberals commenting appear shocked that I do not think education is a value in itself so I have a question for them: If our public schools were dominated by a conservative-Christian world view and not a liberal-secular one, would you still be shocked? Furthermore, an education can be incorrect, biased, or simply evil (see Nazi Youth, Mao's Cultural Rev, et al). Finally, if liberals truly value "diversity," shouldn't that value be represented in the world views of our educators?
In conclusion, I repeat: Education is not a value in itself.

Ballooning Bureaucracy
|

Over the last 9 months, we have seen a drastic increase in government spending, deficits, and debt. You will often see or hear pundits and TV personalities opining about these metrics in relation to the size of government. However, you don’t often hear about another important metric relative to the expansion of government, and that is the growth of the federal bureaucracy.
Since the President passed his massive non-stimulating stimulus bill, it has proven to have been largely ineffective and inefficient. But several government agencies have made hires just to oversee the stimulus spending, and the federal workforce has ballooned by 15.6% since 2006.
In his request for the stimulus bill, the President said:
As soon as I took office, I asked this Congress to send me a recovery plan by Presidents’ Day that would put people back to work and put money in their pockets. Not because I believe in bigger government – I don’t.”
However, actions speak louder than words and President Obama has been the vanguard of bigger government, making now routine incursions into virtually every level of private life from student loans to health care. The point here is simple, as the government grows, liberty declines, and inevitably the taxpayer and the rest of the economy suffer.
As Ronald Reagan once said:
No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs – once launched – never disappear, Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this Earth.”

Americans Think Iran Has Halted Warhead Construction. Israelis Don't.

The two countries, along with a few European nations, are maintaining a false public show of solidarity while actually being very conflicted about whether Iran is continuing to develop nuclear warheads, according to reports. Unsurprisingly, Israel has the most cautionary, defensive stance. Rolf Mowatt-Larssen, former head of intelligence at the Department of Energy and a C.I.A. nuclear expert, had this to say about the discrepancy:
It’s often tradecraft that gets us bollixed up...It comes down to interpreting the same data in different ways, in looking at the same information and coming up with different conclusions.

That's Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship on why Obama's energy policies are wrong:
To pass laws that dictate that 70% of the carbon emissions must be reduced in 20 years is insane because nobody even knows that they can do it. None of it matters because of the Asian use of coal and because there's really no proof of global warming. So to me, it's a dilution of public attention from the one point [sic] trillion dollar deficit. Somehow they've managed to keep the public's mind off real issues.

And some people still think that Hollywood represents mainstream values...

Showing how out of touch many Hollywood filmmakers continue to be with mainstream values, a large group of Hollywood bigshots are showing their support for releasing famed director Roman Polanski from prison.
CNN.com reported on why the director of "Chinatown" and "The Pianist" was arrested recently: "The filmmaker pleaded guilty in 1977 to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor but fled before he could be sentenced...The filmmakers [who signed this petition] objected to his being arrested en route to the film festival, which held a tribute to him this year." CNN.com also noted that several many famous respected contemporary directors including Martin Scorcese, David Lynch, Woody Allen signed the petition.
Liberal columnist Eugene Robinson from the Washington Post, who I seldom agree with, had a powerful column yesterday criticizing those who take pity on Polanski. Robinson wrote the following about the famed director:
This isn't about a genius who is being hounded for flouting society's hidebound conventions. It's about a rich and powerful man who used his fame and position to assault -- in every sense, to violate -- an innocent child.
And it's about a man who ran away rather than face the consequences of his actions. Before any sentence could be imposed, he absconded like a weasel to live a princely life in France. Before celebrities sign the Polanski petition, they should try to evaluate the reprehensible accusations against the director and the implications of his guilty plea before they openly advocate for his release.

Guys, Medicare's Bankruptcy is No Big Deal
|
|

Washington Post wunderkind Ezra Klein thinks that Medicare is, like, an awesome program that may be driving us bankrupt, but in the process of driving us bankrupt, will help reign in our health care costs! Come again? Medicare is going broke. It will bankrupt us. Case closed! Except for one thing: So will private-sector health care. The story here is simple. You've heard it a thousand times. Health-care costs are growing more quickly than wages or GDP growth. Much more quickly, in fact. If that trend isn't arrested, there's only one outcome: Costs will overwhelm us. That's true for Medicare and true for the rest of the health-care system. The relevant question, then, is not whether Medicare will bankrupt us, but will it do so more quickly than private health-care insurance? ...Medicare's rate of spending will bankrupt us, but more slowly than private health insurance. Which would give us more time to figure out a fix. This is not the relevant question. As has been well-catalogued, Americans' private health care spending has risen in conjunction with the percentage of their incomes spent on other life necessities (food, housing) has been precipitously dropping. Medicare's costs have been skyrocketing and are projected to overwhelm us at the same time that most other sectors of government spending are doing the same thing. The other relevant question that immediately pops to mind is: whose behavior is more likely to change? Politicians who have a sweet handout program to an important voting bloc that don't want to see their benefits cut? Or private persons who will sit at home and see that no, they shouldn't get an MRI when they feel like they're coming down with a case of the sniffles? (Example has been exaggerated for effect.)

Begala Demands GOP Condemn "Enemy of Humanity" Comment & Adds Bush "Was A Liar"

Democrat leaders ran in unison to the principal's office demanding an apology when Joe Wilson made a truthful statement at an inappropriate time. But what about those who repeat their favorite liberal bumper sticker mantra: "Bush Lied, People Died"?
Today on The Beard's show Paul Begala couldn't help (in Joe Wilson fashion) blurting "He [Bush] was a liar!" during a comment by GOP'er Rich Galen. Stay classy Democrats.
