Shrouded in Mystery |

Charles Krauthammer points out how odd it is that Barack Obama has no buddies or associates to testify to him or his character.
Well, yes and no. Certainly, never expressing an overt opinion can help "maintain one's viability within the political system" (as Bill Clinton once effectively put it). But its downside is that it involves withholding most of one's personality in a way that's inimical to true friendship. Even though I worked with Barack for the better part of the year -- and there were some things about him I liked -- I never felt as though I truly knew him, and I think few others did either. Almost everything about him seemed careful and calculated not to generate any controversy that could trip him up later.
I suspect, however, that there may be people who could testify to what Barack is really like -- I'm just not sure that he wants them in the public eye. Bill Ayers, for example. Or Frank Marshall Davis.
Michael Froman -- former chief of staff to Bob Rubin and described here as an Obama advisor -- was with us on the Review. Strangely, he's been silent. Perhaps Barack was worried at the convention about touting his Harvard Law School friends, lest he again drive home his elitism?
Even if so, it's highly revealing of his views and inexperience that Barack Obama's circle of friendship would be limited to radicals and school friends.

Hillary Congratulates Palin |
|

From CNN:
Hillary Clinton praised the historic nature of John McCain's vice presidential selection in a brief statement released Friday that was eagerly anticipated by both presidential campaigns.
“We should all be proud of Governor Sarah Palin's historic nomination, and I congratulate her and Senator McCain," Clinton, the first woman to win a presidential primary, said in the statement. "While their policies would take America in the wrong direction, Governor Palin will add an important new voice to the debate.”
The McCain campaign has made little secret of the fact the selection of Palin — the first woman to appear on a Republican presidential ticket — was in part designed to court supporters of Clinton's White house bid, some of whom feel the New York senator was treated unfairly during the primaries because of her gender and remain wary of supporting Obama.

A Mini Rant for Conservative Women |

I can't tell you how many times I've been asked in various media interviews questions like "How does it feel to be a member of a party that doesn't stand up for or promote women?" or "How come there aren't more Republican women in politics?" as if they were all locked up barefoot and pregnant in a kitchen by a chauvinist GOP good ole boy network and I wasn't ever given rightful opportunity as a political writer.
They're disgusting questions, often asked by very nice people who seemingly forget or ignore the Condi Rices, the Marsha Blackburns, the Michelle Malkins, the Bay Buchuanans, the Kathleen Parkers and all the rest. Because Republican women don't cry, fuss and make their gender their number one electoral qualification, ala Hillary Clinton, they've been overlooked by the Mainstream Media.
Until today.
Palin's executive experience makes her legitimate. Unlike many of the so-called liberal feminist icons, Palin didn't marry into power and her daddy didn't get her this job, either. She did it ON HER OWN. And that's the kind of woman I want to break the highest, hardest glass ceiling.

Palin on Energy |

When this Palin interview ran in IBD I cut it out and kept it on my desk for several weeks because I was struck by the way she masterfully framed the right to drill as a nativist issue, among other things.
I'd say it's required reading today. Here's an excerpt:
PALIN:We believe that listing polar bears as such is a significant threat to development, because most live on the North Slope. (But) the biggest problem with the ruling is that we are the only state that is impacted. Most polar bears (are found) in Canada. We've got other places in the world once again telling us Alaskans how to live, and whether we can develop. We've coexisted with bears for decades to no detrimental effect. Our bear population is thriving. This listing is nothing but interference from outsiders who insist on keeping Alaska from developing our resources responsibly. I tell you, if we thought we were killing a species—in this case, the polar bear — we would mend our ways. You have to remember, our native culture is paramount to the Alaska way of life. My husband is native, my kids are native. We have such respect for native culture, and the polar bear is part of it. We can develop and take care of animals, and we'll continue to do both.

The Hillary Backlash Over the Palin Pick ... |

Earlier today, Howard Wolfson, Hillary's former communications director, wrote:
"If the pick is indeed Sarah Palin you are going to have a lot of women voters wondering why Senator Obama didn't tap Senator Clinton as his running mate."
How much do you want to bet a lot of Hillary supporters are asking the same question today?

Dobson: “I Would Pull that Lever” for McCain-Palin |

Earlier this year Dr. Jim Dobson, President of Focus on the Family made news when he announced on “The Dennis Prager Show” that he “cannot and will not vote for Senator John McCain.” Today, on The Dennis Prager Show, the conservative leader changed course and announced his enthusiastic support on the heels of the announcement by Senator McCain of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate.
Dennis Prager: I have a guest here who’s extremely significant in American life, whether you call it American political, certainly American religious life, one of the best known Christians in America— Dr. James Dobson who is president and founder of Focus on the Family…. The last time you were on was a very serious conversation about your feeling at the time that you just couldn’t vote for John McCain, and where do you stand now?
Dr. James Dobson: Well, Dennis, I shared with a colleague just a few minutes ago exactly what you said about the period of time when Ronald Reagan had broken onto the scene and I was in Washington D.C. the day he was inaugurated. That was one of the most exciting days of my life, because everything that we had hoped for and been working for had come to pass. I feel very much that way today. Maybe that’s an overstatement. Maybe time won’t validate it, but this is a very exciting and encouraging day for conservatives and pro-family activists. I am just very, very pleased....(more)

Why Conservative Republicans Are So Happy: Victory and Energy for the Second American Century |

To get a sense of the huge enthusiasm among conservatives for the Sarah Palin pick, scroll down the postings at RobinsonandLong.com which aggregates the most important center-right voices.
I have a new Townhall.com column up soon explaining this reaction, but it is wide, deep, and it will endure. Short version: With this pick the future of the Republican Party is securely conservative, pro-life, pro-family, pro-military and strong on national defense, pro-Second Amendment, pro-property rights, pro-free market, pro-energy exploration and anchored in outside-the-Beltway Reaganism.

Townhall Happily Heading to MN! |

... Townhall is heading to "The Cities." 1 We will be covering the presidential campaign all next week from the RNC Convention.
The Palin pick has made me look forward to the trip out to MN (especially when you consider what might have been). Had things gone differently, it would have been a long plane ride.
Stay with us for up-to-the-minute updates and analysis -- and behind-the-scenes coverage and pictures. And make sure to post your comments and thoughts, too.
If you are a media outlet looking to talk to conservative bloggers who rock, make sure to look us up (we're credentialed). Oh yeah; and if you happen to be hosting a party at the convention, make sure to drop us a line ...
1. During my time in North Dakota, I learned that Minneapolis/ St. Paul is referred to by North Dakotans simply as "The Cities" -- not the "Twin Cities" -- but "The Cities." The dream of most kids growing up in the Dakota's is not to move to L.A. or NYC -- but to make it to "The Cities."

Re: Is This a Fight Obama Wants to Have? |

I think this is actually the fight McCain wants to have.
Palin is the mother of a soldier, has travelled to places like Kuwait to visit the troops, has been the commander of Alaska's National Guard, and if you care about the foreign policy issue of weening us off of foreign oil -- she is uniquely qualified.
