Is Obama's 16-Month Timeline Out the Window?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 7:43 PM
Obama must have learned something in Iraq.  Either that, or he is simply continuing the trend of changing positions more frequently than most people change underwear.

This startling revelation comes from an interview with Newsweek today:
You've been talking about those limited missions for a long time. Having gone there and talked to both diplomatic and military folks, do you have a clearer idea of how big a force you'd need to leave behind to fulfill all those functions?

(OBAMA) -  I do think that's entirely conditions-based. It's hard to anticipate where we may be six months from now, or a year from now, or a year and a half from now.
What?  It's entirely conditions based???  Now maybe I'm wrong, but hasn't Obama been mocking this position for the last couple of years?

What happened to the guy who said this a few months ago:
"In order to end this war responsibly, I will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. We can responsibly remove on to two combat brigades each month. If we start with the number of brigades we have in Iraq today, we can remove all of them 16 months." (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks On Iraq, Fayetteville, NC, 3/19/08)
If Obama is attempting to co-opt McCain's message, or "triangulate" he should realize that -- though he is a great speaker -- he is not as talented at stealing his opponents ideas as Bill Clinton once was.  This sort of maneuver requires more than just audacity, it also requires finesse -- a quality Obama clearly does not possess.

Obama might want to consider the following questions:  Will young voters continue to be excited by a guy who clearly doesn't stand for anything?  How about the Nut-roots?   And will the press finally call him on this?  Stay tuned ...

McCain Hits Obama on Troop Visit ... But Should He?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 7:31 PM
From a McCain press release:
"U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today released its latest television ad entitled "Troops." The ad highlights Barack Obama's record of not calling a single oversight hearing on NATO's mission in Afghanistan, not visiting in Iraq for over 900 days, not supporting our troops when he voted against critical funding in 2007 and not visiting our wounded troops in Germany when he made time to go to the gym but canceled trips to Ramstein and Landstuhl. The ad will air in key states.

Clearly, this is an issue that puts Obama on the defensive.  There is no excuse for his decision to skip this visit.

My only question is: Should McCain be the one making this attack, either in person -- or in campaign ads?

In short, wouldn't this message be better delivered by a surrogate -- while McCain stays above the fray?

... And if you agree with that statement, does the lack of 527 groups (such as Swift Boat Veterans for Truth) this cycle ironically pose a serious problem for a candidate who already has a lot of obstacles to overcome?

Obama Aides "Feel Resentful" Towards Pentagon ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 3:23 PM

ABC News reports:

"Sen. Barack Obama's campaign staff and the Pentagon are putting forth different versions of what happened before Obama cancelled a planned Friday morning visit to the Ramstein air base in Germany.

The Obama campaign has suggested the Pentagon interfered with its decision to visit U.S. troops at the Ramstein and Landstuhl U.S. military bases in Germany -- something the Pentagon denied Friday."
The Pentagon has fired back at Obama's accusations, saying:
"We made it clear to him that campaign staff and press would not be permitted to accompany him," Morrell said of Obama.  "We relayed those ground rules. They made a choice based upon the information we relayed to them.  It was their choice. We had nothing to do with it."
Now, apparently, Obama's team is upset with the Pentagon for setting the record straight ...

MSNBC 1:02 PM ET

ANDREA MITCHELL: “Spin from both sides: the Pentagon would have told you that these are rules that everyone follows. That he was welcomed, he could have gone if he had gone with just a senate aide, but that no campaign aides could go with him. Privately, some people are suggesting that one of the issues was a general – Scott Gration -- who travels with him who's a campaign aide and retired air force general and that the general was told that he could not use his privilege as a retired member of the military to accompany Senator Obama because he is now joined the political campaign. … So that may have been one of the stumbling blocks. … The Obama people certainly feel resentful. They had a planned event. They were planning to leave the press corps on the tarmac and go in themselves, and that they feel the pentagon made it difficult and reminded them of the rules, about which they didn't need to be reminded having just come from a similar visit in Iraq.  But whatever the result, they feel that they have been treated badly by the Pentagon, and that is certainly creating some bad blood.”

Re: If You Can't Get Political Mileage From It, Why Bother?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:27 PM
Obama's team says the Pentagon discouraged him from visiting a medical center.  Not so, says the Pentagon.

... Check out this quote from Major Garrett, which he made earlier on Fox News:

GARRETT: he was scheduled to visit a medical center near ramstein air base. they decided not to do it because it would be viewed as a political act. the pentagon said today both at the podium and in a letter that they never told the obama campaign would be inappropriate. all they said is that there are strict rules about a senator visiting a military base. only still photographer could follow him, but that would be the only media coverage allowed. maybe that had something to do with the ultimate decision not to go. but the cut is making it clear that they did not discourage obama from making the trip, the gist of by some of the restrictions -- they just advised him of restrictions, should he make it.

Obama's Missing Thesis
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:44 AM
The Weekly Standard has more evidence of Barack Obama's lack of transparency.   He seems to be very concerned about keeping a tight handle on anything that could affect perceptions of him -- including his Columbia University thesis ...

Does This Bother You, Too?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:35 AM
MSNBC has this line from Obama's Berlin speech on a loop ...

"I know my country has not perfected itself. At times, we've struggled to keep the promise of liberty and equality for all of our people. We've made our share of mistakes, and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions."

But I also know how much I love America."
At first, it didn't bother me.  But the more I hear it, the more it rubs me the wrong way...

I Just Spoke in Berlin ... I'm Going to Dizz Knee Land
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:27 AM
David Brooks thinks Obama's speech yesterday was pure fluff.  He gives him credit for calling on Germans to "send more troops to Afghanistan," but then adds,

"Much of the rest of the speech fed the illusion that we could solve our problems if only people mystically come together. We should help Israelis and Palestinians unite. We should unite to prevent genocide in Darfur. We should unite so the Iranians won’t develop nukes. Or as Obama put it: 'The walls between races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand. These now are the walls we must tear down.'

... Obama has benefited from a week of good images. But substantively, optimism without reality isn’t eloquence. It’s just Disney."

McCain VP Pick Coming Soon?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:09 AM
The WaPost reports:

"Two top aides to the presumptive Republican nominee said the decision is likely to be announced after Obama returns from Europe on Sunday and before the Beijing Olympics begin Aug. 8."
The argument is that once the Olympics starts, there is essentially no break in news before the GOP convention (because the Democratic convention begins almost immediately after the Olympics ends).

Obama Cancels Troop Tour (Has Time for Germans, Not For U.S. Troops ...)
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:53 PM
Spiegel Online reports:
1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. “Barack Obama will not be coming to us,” a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. “I don’t know why.” Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.

Capt. Ed notes:

I guess this is a question of priorities.  Barack Obama apparently ran short on time in his visit to Germany today, and travelers know how schedules can slip during long tours, even without all of the events Obama had planned.  Those circumstances force people to prioritize their time, and eliminate less-useful stops.

And Jonathan Martin adds:

The optics here are not good: Obama has time to get in a workout and give a speech to a crowd mostly comprised of Europeans, but can't be bothered to visit American troops wounded in action recovering at a military hospital.  Obama's explanation strikes at much of the criticism he's gotten from McCain and the GOP.

Joe Klein on Why No Obama Poll Bump
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 12:51 PM
Joe Klein laments the fact that Obama's glowing press attention hasn't given him a bump in the polls.  The reason, Klein speculates ... is racism!

"Lots of speculation on the web, and in whispering circles, about why Obama's foreign trip--a slam-dunk success substantively and in photo-op terms (Obama laughing with Petraeus in the helicopter was the best)--hasn't resulted in a polling bump. The emerging conventional wisdom seems to be that the trip is a bit too grand, too...presumptuous and voters are wary of that. (And presumption, of course, always comes with the subterranean tinge of racism.) Maybe so."

AP Style Guide: Always Focus on the Negative
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 12:27 PM
Rush was just talking about this story.  Don't you love how the AP insists on inserting bad economic news ...

"The hourly federal minimum wage will increase from $5.85 to $6.55 today, but few workers will see the extra 70 cents an hour in their checks."

McCain Moving in Battlegrounds
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:20 AM
There are some new numbers out from Quinnipiac and the Washington Post:

CO: McCain 46 – Obama 44
MI: Obama 46 - McCain 42
MN: Obama 46 - McCain 44
WI: Obama 50 - McCain 39
As Jonathan Martin describes it:

"Since the last joint Q-WashPost surveys of these four states in June, McCain has moved up in Colorado and Minnesota while Obama has moved down in all four."

Ntl. Media Missing McCain's Local Coverage
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 11:02 AM
The media narrative is that Obama has won the week, while McCain has floundered.

While there is no doubt Obama did well in the national media, largely overlooked is the fact that McCain has quietly been garnering very favorable attention in the local media.

For example, Pennsylvania is obviously a very important state.  Here's the front page from today's The Times Leader, a Wilkes Barre-based newspaper:

... And here is yesterday's front page from the Manchester Union Leader:

The national media is missing the story of McCain's success in garnering favorable attention in local outlets.  Of course, this wouldn't be the first time a "less glamorous" political tactic has flown under their radar ...
